The phenomenon of interruption in conversations between men and women: based on Kazakh podcasts

In recent years, the topic of dominance in communication has been considered a pressing problem in sociolinguistic research since it is one of the main factors determining scenarios of speech behavior. Speech behavior in society is related to gender stereotypes; therefore, dominance in conversation also has a gender basis. This article addresses issues related to which gender dominates in a conversation, what methods are used to demonstrate dominance, and the peculiarities of interrupting. The purpose of the study is to analyse the phenomenon of interruption in conversations between men and women based on Kazakh podcasts. The object of the study is the manifestation of the phenomenon of interruption by men and women in conversations in Kazakh. The research data was selected from the recordings of podcasts in Kazakh, transcribed by the authors. First, the study provides an analytical review of the results of research related to the phenomenon of interruption in linguistics. The features of interrupting in a conversation have been determined: men interrupt more often than women; interruption demonstrates men’s dominance and control over the course of speech; men and women pursue different goals when interrupting.
