Abstract

This study is based on the principles of gender analysis, which is one of the young and promising areas in literary criticism, but despite this, it has a theoretical basis in the form of sociological, psychological and literary studies. The goal is to consider the work of L. Ulitskaya in the context of gender on the example of the early story “Sonechka”. To achieve this goal, various research methods were used, including motive and gender analyses. In the course of this study, it was revealed that the author in a work of art follows the stereotypical idea of femininity and masculinity, endowing them with typical character traits and behaviors, with the
exception of the main character, who carries the features of a binary personality. To form the author's gender picture of the world, L. Ulitskaya uses various means of artistic expression, more deeply revealing the understanding of masculinity and femininity through motifs and chronotope.
