Abstract

The author of the article outlines the main critical approaches presented in foreign literature and reflecting the  content of postmodern polemics of the second half of the XX century — the beginning of the XXI century. The author of the article focuses attention on reflection of what happened in the world during the second half  of the XX century in the nature and content of English literature, which resulted in the formation of new critical approaches, the ability to critically evaluate phenomena such as postcolonial, ethnic, and immigrant literature. The author focuses on the problems of the second half of the twentieth century’s literature, which is associated with the issues of identity, ethnicity, race, assimilation, immigration, the problem of existence on the  fault line between ethnic dominant and marginal cultures. The analysis of the works of contemporary foreign  researchers allows to conclude about the successful testing of their poststructuralist theories of hybridity and  difference, as well as to optimize the utilization of poststructuralist theories to describe cross-cultural phenomena. The significance of these critical approaches is determined by the fact that they are relevant not only  for literary analysis and literary criticism, but also for research in sociology, psychology, history, gender and
interdisciplinary research.
